This paperback edition of selected Missouri narratives is reprinted in facsimile from the typewritten pages of the interviewers, just as they were originally typed.. Compiled in seventeen states during the years 1936-38, the collection consists of more than two thousand interviews with former slaves, most of them first-person accounts of slave life and the respondents' own reactions to bondage. The view that slavery could best be described by those who had themselves experienced it personally has found expression in several thousand commentaries, autobiographies, narratives, and interviews with those who "endured." Although most of these accounts appeared before the Civil War, more than one-third are the result of the ambitious efforts of thNot bad at all. Anyway, my words don't do Robert or his great work justice. This book is a decent introduction to the realities of life in a less-privileged country: the small wonders of nature, and the difficult trade-offs that people have to make in order to survive. As another reviewer has commented, I found the illustrations just somewhat - well, odd. I found this book to be a great introduction to many smart grid issues. This book was very rich in text and left little to be discovered. The horror, the scare is palpable, and constantly present. The marriage of exquisite illustrations and lyrical text should make this book a classic. I was reminded the other day of the story of "The Snow Goose" written by Paul Gallico. I have some rusty drawing skills and natural sleeping talent which I am no longer willing to lay dormant.
